At Least the Pizza Was Good

Went on a date this afternoon with Helen Cardrick (Pembroke, 1988). I'm prepared to name the guilty party. A truly weird date given that it was at the bar she owns in Herne Hill (Herne Hill! Herne Hill! I had dragged myself to Herne Hill. It may think it's the new Notting Hill, but it's got a long way to go yet) and I spent more time talking to her best friend. Not exactly ideal circumstances to get to know someone. What the hell was she thinking.? I don't think I'll be seeing her again.

You will have to draw comfort from the pizza as you say. I actually broke my new-year's resolution from a number of years ago and went to Pizza Hut, though I had mitigating circumstances in that I had my current sister in law, nephew, niece and 3 of her relatives wanting lunch, and this was the only 'reasonably safe' bet in the centre of Oxford.

I have to say the pizza was much better than they were when I foreswore Pizza Hut, though not good enough for me to want to repeat the experience.

What was her subject? (I ask as I don't remember the name.)

No idea. English or languages, I guess. We didn't talk about this. We didn't talk about anything!

Don't suppose you got the friend's phone number...?

Well, she asked me if she could borrow her friend. For the rest of the evening. She asked me if I minded. Of course, I minded. So I told her I minded. Ordinarily, I would have pretended I didn't mind, but the truth was I did, but I've been on so many bad dates that I thought I'd say what I meant for once. She still bought me a glass of wine later. But I suspect that this is a relationship that will be going no further. Also, she struck me that she was up her own arse anyway. I can't be doing with that. One reason why she (the friend) was single. My date was a bit of lovely. Again, not my type. But what I can't get over is the fact that my date thought it would be a good idea to have a date at her bar with her best friend there! Was it some kind of test or was she just thoughtless? What kind of response was she looking for?

Did you actually know your date well before? If not, then the friend could have been there as security (something us ladies have to be conscious of these days). She may have wanted to show off with her bar and the friend was there as an incidental, or she might have just gone for the easy option.

Whatever, there's no point trying to analyse it really. Men and women are generally a mystery to each other, so chalk it up to experience and go out and try again. Can't be as bad as a date I had a little while ago - the guy ended up in tears as it was the anniversary of his divorce! Flattering. And yes, he did ask to see me again. D'oh.

I didn't know her at all (she's Vivid on Love & Friends). Given that it was in her own bar (Escape in Herne Hill), security would have been less of an issue than normal, I'd have thought! I think you are right that the friend was accidental and that she wanted to show off the bar. Maybe, in hindsight, it would have been better to have saved that for a subsequent date.

Ah well, chalk it up to experience. I look forward to hearing about the next date!
