Sibelius's Fifth Symphony
Dec. 11th, 2003 11:45 amWent to the Barbican last night. For once, I managed to be early and not get lost. How anyone who has ever been to the Barbican could think that the National Theatre is the worse building in the country is beyond me. Not that the NT is great, but compared to the Barbican, it is simplicity personified. The Barbican reminds me strongly of the 'Plex in Neal Stephenson's wonderful first novel "The Big U". It's certainly the right era. I wonder if there has ever been a study done of these 1960s labyrinthine edifice. There is definitely a novel in it!
Anyway, back to the concert: Schumann's piano concerto, The Lark Ascending, and Sibelius's Fifth Symphony. And here is your starter for ten: which 80s pop song uses the refrain from Sibelius's Fifth? It's someone like Shakespear's Sister, but i don't think it is them. Anyone got any ideas.
Recently, I was surprised to discover that the Red Dwarf theme music is derived from one of Mahler's symphony (also the fifth, I think). That sounds familiar, I thouught, GooD lord, it's Red Dwarf! It's an incredible world at times, isn't it?
