I was walking along the Thames towpath in Watermans Park in Brentford yesterday. There are a number of abandoned boats along there in varying states of disrepair. One of them is half-sunk and covered in various forms of vegetation (there's no doubt a PhD in how such a structure is colonised - where does the soil come from, for instance?) I was looking at it and saw some dark, furry creatures moving around. Three rats, plain as pikestaffs. Yikes! I hope they don't decide to head over the road to Capital West.
I also saw some herons on Brentford Ait. They are big blighters. Quite amusing seeing one try to land on a branch! Its first attempt failed, but it managed at second go, but really they're a bit large for that game!
On the bird front, I saw a woodpecker in Kew Gardens on Saturday. A perfect Woodpecker Cider woodpecker.
